- Expert in the Derivatives Segment “Be skeptical." Robert C. Klemkosky, Dean of Graduate School of Business (GSB) at Sungkyunkwan University, mentioned ‘skeptical’ more than ten times while he was interviewed for an hour. He suggested a core principle that a chief financial officer should keep in mind: not even think about any derivatives product which is beyond one’s capacity is the best way. Dr. Klemkosky is the Fred T. Greene Professor Emeritus of Finance at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. He served as Chairman of the Finance Department there from 1986 to 1992 and again from 2000 to 2003. He was Associate Dean, Research and Operations from 1992-1995. He was the Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance and has served as Vice President of the Financial Management Association. - Sang-Hui Lee, CEO of AIA Life Korea
- On Sep 30th, Sang-Hui Lee, CEO of AIA Life Korea visited Sungkyunkwan University to deliver a special lecture for the Understanding Corporate Business with the CEO program. Mr. Lee began the lecture by asking ‘Who Am I?”. According to Mr. Lee, an analysis of who I am should precede all others. He emigrated to the United States when he was young and received his bachelor’s degree and Master’s Degree at University of Colorado. AIA Life Korea has been serving customers in Korea since 1987, enjoying strong support from customers and growth in operations as well as in assets. AIA Life Korea has significantly contributed to the development of the Korean insurance sector by introducing a variety of advanced insurance techniques such as the Full Service Agency (FSA) system and direct tele-marketing channels. It provided the first foreign currency Fixed Annuity (FA) product through the bancassurance channel in the Korean market. Currently AIA Life Korea has more than 700 employees and a 7,000-strong sales force with 85 branch offices and telemarketing centers.

- Eunyong Park, Senior Manager at LG Electronics
- Ms. Eunyong Park visited Sungkyunkwan University to deliver a special lecture for the Understanding Corporate Business with the CEO program on October 14th. She is currently a senior manager in the Talent Management Department at LG Electronics, Inc. In her lecture, What is Leadership?, she defined the relationship between a leader and follower and discussed their respective distinctiveness and roles within an organization. One of her main points was that a brave follower means a shortcut to an outstanding leader. During the Q&A session, Ms. Park answered the challenging questions posed to her by the Business School students. Ms. Park explained that the degree of one’s potential is the main criteria for talent recruitment at LG Electronics and that one’s success as a leader in an organization stems from the overall person. LG Electronics is a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, mobile communications and home appliances, employing more than 80,000 people working in over 117 operations around the world. LG Electronics is playing an active role in the world market with its assertive global business policy and conducts job training for 18~20 weeks. Ms. Park received her bachelor’s degree from University of Texas in the United States, and her MBA from Yonsei University. Prior to joining LG Electronics, Ms. Park worked for Bain & Company, Finiti, Mckinsey & Company and other major consulting firms.

- Jooyoun Kim, Marketing Director at Procter & Gamble (P&G)
- On Thursday, October 7th, Ms. Jooyoun Kim, marketing director of Procter & Gamble (P&G) Korea, provided a special lecture for the Understanding Corporate Business with the CEO program. Her lecture was conducted in two parts: What it takes to be a global leader and How P&G grows global leaders. Ms. Kim remarked that 10% of human capacity is from knowledge acquired through study, 20% from precepts by parents and mentors, while 70% is gained from personal experiences. Therefore, as a leader, the greatest importance in recruitment actually should fall on experience and quick adaptability in business, not necessarily on educational specialties. P&G’s recruiting and development philosophy “build from within” fosters a strong culture of trust and shared experiences. P&G’s mission is to provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world’s consumers, now and for generations to come.

- Youngsoo Park (Commercial Science ’58) donates one hundred million KRW
- Youngsoo Park (Commercial Science ’58) visited Jung-Don Seo, the president of Sungkyunkwan University to donate one hundred million KRW for scholarship fund. Mr. Park said “By virtue of scholarships for 6 years, I could graduate from university and graduate school which would be impossible on my own. I have never forgotten about it. I just want to say to the young students not to lose hope.” Mr. Park joined Sun Kyung Corp. in 1966 and he became a head of Europe, Middle East, and Africa Division when he was 42. - Geunmyeon Lee (W-AMP 1st batch), CEO of SAMSUNG Fiber Optics Geunmyeon Lee (58. W-AMP 1st cohort) joined Samsung Group in 1976 and has worked as a human resources director for 30 years. Mr. Lee said that he used to value one’s attitudethe most when recruiting personnel before but now values more the one who knows one’s own mind. Adding that, ”Creativity is becoming important these days. It is more important what kind of contents one has when working than what kind of attitude one has.” Mr. Lee is going to be listed in Marquis Who's Who in 2011 as a HR expert. Marquis Who's Who, a subsidiary of News Communications, Inc., is the American publisher of a number of directories containing short biographies of influential persons. Entries in Marquis Who's Who books list career and personal data for each biography, including education, writings and creative works, civic activities, awards, political affiliation. Marquis Who's Who states that the selection of individuals for listing in its publications is based on reference value. Individuals become eligible for listing by virtue of their positions and/or noteworthy achievements that have proved to be of significant value to society. Mr. Lee also mentioned that one should have keen insight rather than educational specialties and this can be gained through constantly reading newspapers and a variety of books. There are too many university graduates compared to the available jobs. - Mr. Changkyu Lee, vice president at Hite-Jinro Group, visited Sungkyunkwan University for the Understanding Corporate Business with the CEO program on October 28th. Mr. Lee began his lecture by defining the CEO role. He said that stock prices do not meet analysts’ expectations since there are too many uncertainties, hence one should change constantly in order to adapt oneself to the uncertainty. According to Mr. Lee, the CEO is the right expression for a person who plays a pivotal role in change and leadership of the organization. He mentioned that the role of a CEO should be applied differently upon nations, companies, and governance structures of companies. Ultimately, a successful CEO is up to the ability of how he/she is flexible in responding to changes. HITE Group was first established in 1933 under the name of Chosun Beer Co., Ltd., the first beer company in Korea. The Hite-Jinro Group, Korea’s largest liquor maker, was formed after Hite Breweries acquired Jinro in 2005. Hite-Jinro currently has 60 percent of the Korean beer market and over half the soju market.

- Choongwon Kwon (W-AMP 10thcohort) chosen for ‘2010 Sungkyun Journalists Award’ Sung Eon Hoi, vice president of SBS, said Choongwon Kwon, chief editor of Herald Economics, was chosen for the 2010 Distinguished Sungkyun Journalists Award. He received the award at a ceremony held at the 2010 regular general meeting on Nov 22nd. Mr. Kwon, editorial director of The Herald Business (W-AMP 10th cohort, Economics ‘78) joined The Herald Business in 1989 as a senior reporter and served as a securities manager. Before landing his current position of editorial director since March of 2010, he worked as an editorial writer, financial editor, deputy director, and a director of strategy and marketing.

- Students Rush to Korean MBA Schools
- Foreign students rush to Korean MBA schools increased sharply by 43% in the second half of the year. An increasing number of foreign students are applying to local graduate schools of business administration, said the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Nov 15. A total of 1,482 people applied for admission in the 900-member quota this fall semester, resulting in a competition rate of 1.6 to 1, the ministry said. In the second biannual admission recruitment for 13 local graduate schools of business administration, 123 of 900 newly enrolled students were foreign nationals, a 43 percent rise from 86 in the first half of the year, officials said. The foreign students were admitted into nine schools 23 for Sungkyunkwan University, 39 for Korea University, 29 for Yonsei University, and 13 for Seoul National University. U.S. and Chinese nationals topped the list with 27(22%) and 25(20.3%), respectively, followed by Indian (9), Uzbek(6) and U.K.(5) nationals, said the ministry. The use of English has also begun in local MBA courses. Among the 46 courses, 39 (84.8 %) have newly opened English classes and 12 courses nine full-time and three part-time will be led exclusively in English. Most schools are also working to acquire international recognition from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business or the European Quality Improvement System in the near future.
