SKKU School of Mechanical Engineering
The Cradle of Global Engineering Leaders
The School of Mechanical Engineering is originated from the integration of the Department of Mechanical Engineering founded in 1966 and the Department of Machine Design established in 1978. Together, both departments have produced over 7,500 mechanical engineers who have contributed to the national development of Korea and actively participated in industry, academia, and research institutes. Since the integration of the two departments as the School of Mechanical Engineering in 1996, it has continuously endeavored to develop itself and the quality of its education through the establishment of world-class education programs, educational environment, academic affairs management, department operations, and student management.
The School of Mechanical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University seeks to combine excellence in education and research. The school’s mission is to train the future leaders of industry, academia, government and society. The goal of our academic program is to develop engineers that meet the highest standards and can solve practical problems using creative problem-solving skills.
The undergraduate program has been accredited by ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea) since 2005 and we focus on demand-driven education and student-centered education. Since then, it has also operated the system with special industry-oriented tracks such as the Digital Appliances Track and Digital Imaging Track with Samsung Electronics, and the Secondary Battery Tracks with Samsung SDI and LG Chemical.
Graduate studies in our program involve academic courses and independent research activities to prepare students for a career as a specialist, professional, and scholar in the field of mechanical engineering as well as multidisciplinary research themes in bioengineering, information and nano/micro technology. Several research laboratories and groups have been established within the school including the Institute of Advanced Machinery and Technology (IAMT), the SKKU Advanced Institute of Nano Technology (SAINT), the Smart Future Appliances Research Center (SFARC), the Safety and Structural Integrity Research Center (SAFE), the Creative Design & Intelligent Tutoring Systems Research Center (CREDITS), and the Robotics Engineering Research Center (RERC). Moreover, our department has been selected for the highly competitive government support programs such as BK21 (Brain Korea 21) PLUS programs to enhance the technological competitiveness of industries of Korea. Above all, these research activities have contributed to the education of excellent research professionals who will be responsible for the future of our country. Based on our strong research performance, our department was ranked at World’s Top 44 in the field of mechanical engineering by the QS World University Rankings in 2018.
As a school with highly diverse faculty interests, we encourage innovation and creativity in multidisciplinary themes as well as core areas of mechanical engineering through our education and research programs. The school of mechanical engineering is committed to the dissemination and advancement of engineering knowledge for the betterment of society, the nation, and the world.
