With the development of advanced technology and science, and increased need for an affluent lifesyle, design will become much more important. Against this backdrop, the design majors are divided into Visual Communication Design and Surface Design. The Visual Communication Design program fosters originative capabilities as a professional creative director to produce various communication media while the Surface Design program aims to foster creative designers who will contribute to the current industrial society by developing value-added products and planning in the textile industry.
The department has a total of 40 students (20 for Visual Communication Design and 20 for Surface Design). Every year, about 40 students graduate and start their professional careers.
The Visual Communication Design major is to develop the creative capabilities of students as art directors who design various communication medias. It places focus on advertisement design which plays a central role in corporate marketing and management activities, publication-related design, CI, package, illustration, and various digital media design and offers curricula relating to the fields above mentioned. It intends to foster competent art directors who can design communication media.
Surface Design
The Surface Design major is predominantly to adapt a space in the textile industry, based on dyeing and textiles that maximize added value of the industry. The major offers curricula for dyeing, weaving, textile design and space design. Furthermore, it is devoted to fostering personnel required for the industrial society by equipping students with textile design and cultural product manufacturing.
(2) Graduate Programs
Th Graduate Course consists of; the General and Design Graduate Schools. The General Graduate School is composed of four semesters at daytime and Design School of five semesters at night time.
General Graduate School:
offers visual communication design, surface design, and brand design management
focuses on research and development of value-added design and the development of students' capabilities as artists
establishment of theoretical foundations
Design Graduate School:
offers hands-on knowledge of the industry
developing design professionals who can actively cope with changing environments at present and in the future
offers visual communication design, environment design and design management, fashion design, and public architecture design fields of study
After graduation students have the opportunity to work in such areas as;
an illustrator in various areas such as PR dpartment of large sized companies
advertisement agencies
character design companies
web designing
editing, packaging
identity design companies
textile design companies (apparel, scarf, neck-tie, bag design, etc.)
home furnishing design companies (bedding companies, wallpaper and flooring makers, etc.)
The instructors in the Department of Design provide very close guidance to students, resulting in many winning prizes in several famous contest exhibits such as; “Hanyoung Scholarship Foundation’s Textile Design Contest”, “IDEA Award” and “Adobe Reddot Award”, one of the three grand design awards. As well as this, design major students from SKKU are also working very actively in the design field.
International Engagement
1. We open annual collaborative exhibitions with China, Taiwan, Japan, Taipei and more.
2. We run the course; “Global Capstone Design”. The instructors and students visit outside the country to promote students’ global competence and working experience. In 2016, students visited Tokyo Polytechnic University, in Japan and worked together with students majoring in Interactive Art.
