- Graduate Students of Dept. of Mathematics (SKKU) received the Best Awards at the Startups Competition Using AI
- Do-hee Jeong and Sa-joon Park, graduate students of Dept. of Mathematics (SKKU) received the best awards at the finalists of the startups competition using weather data analysis artificial intelligence. The competition was held on July 18 at COEX (Seoul), under joint supervision of Korea Artificial Intelligence Association (KORAIA), Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration and Daejeon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation. A total of 21 teams have challenged and 10 teams have finalized. The competition was organized to discover new models of artificial intelligence and ideas for solving social problems through meteorological big data analysis. Seung-hee Son, the head of Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration, emphasized the creation of value through the use of weather data by participating in the finals. Byung-hoon Kim, chairman of KORAIA, also suggested that a new market could be opened by analyzing weather data. Kim said, “We can create synergy by combining weather data, which is a representative field of public data, with existing industries. If the weather data analysis task announced today leads to actual results, we expect new business fields to be created.” (source: http://it.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2019/07/18/2019071802851.html)

- Indaba of Science and Technology Policy, Declaring a New Paradigm
- Indaba of science and technology policy, declaring a new paradigm for sciectific culture. = Science is understanding, not knowledge. Professor Bum-joon Kim (the Dept. of Physics, SKKU), who serves as a science communicator, made a meaningful comment regarding scientific culture during a indaba of science and technology policy held at the InterContinental Hotel in Seoul on July 5. "Science is not just a list of knowledge," he said. "Science is completely different from memorization. It's urgent to draw experience from knowledge we already know." Prof. Kim said, "Everyone should have an interest in science and reach the core culture through a process of insight. This process is 'popularization of science'." And he said "It should be possible for many people to understand science through natural processes, away from knowledge-oriented, solitary investigation.", adding that "now our country is faced with a situation where science has to be popularized." For 'popularization of science,' Prof. Kim said, scientists themselves should come down (to where the public is). He reiterated the importance of active communication with the public. - Quantum Algorithm for Calculating Molecular Vibronic Spectra
- Developed efficient quantum algorithm that can be operated on quantum computers and expand to anharmonic oscillator using quantum phase estimation Chemistry Prof. HUH, JOONSUK Recently, not only academics but also industries such as Google, IBM, and Intel are interested in quantum computation research. We expect a prototype quantum computer, which can outperform classical computers in 10 years. Among the various applications of quantum computing, quantum computational chemistry would become a major application area of quantum computing. Prof. Huh has been developing quantum simulation method for molecular vibronic spectroscopy for non-universal quantum computers. In this work, an efficient quantum algorithm for the molecular vibronic spectroscopy, which can be operated in the universal quantum computer, was developed. This new quantum algorithm based on the quantum phase estimation algorithm can be applied to more complicated molecular quantum anharmonic oscillator problems.
