- Professor Yun-Hwansu identified the parallel evolution of life sciences of red seaweeds and seed plants
- Professor Yun-Hwansu identified the parallel evolution of life sciences of red seaweeds and seed plants for the first time "Unveil secrets of the red seaweeds and seed plants evolved from chloroplast" □ Recent papers which examined the parallel evolution comparing the chloroplast of 50 species of red seaweeds amd existing seed plants over 800 was published in BMC Biology online edition on Sep. 2nd. □ In this paper, Yun-Hwansu Sungkyunkwan University (Professor of Biological Science, corresponding author) and its affiliated laboratory graduate students Lee-Joonmo (first author), Jo-Chunghyeon, Park-Seungin and undergraduate students Choi-Jiwon, Song-hyeonseok participated, Thesis titled 'Parallel evolution of highly conserved plastid genome architecture in red seaweeds and seed plants’. □ Green plants including red seaweeds and seed plants each were truly differentiate into red algae and seed plants millions of years ago as one of the sister group of plant origin from a common ancestor. despite of red seaweeds and seed plants’ long evolutionary history and habitat differences, they have only three unique chloroplast structure. This red seaweeds and seed plants differentiated very quickly through successful reproduction method so that they evolved to direction in which the chloroplast structure stabilized. Professor Through these studies, Mr. Yun-Hwansu presented "the evolution of organisms have certain direction even if the process is different“. □ The study was carried out by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Rural Development Administration and National Research Foundation.

- Sungkyunkwan University, "Applied Algebra and Optimization Research Center" held an opening ceremony
- Sungkyunkwan University, "Applied Algebra and Optimization Research Center" held an opening ceremony "Applied Algebra and Optimization Research Center(AORC)” selected as leading science research center supported by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and National Research Foundation has held opening ceremony on Oct. 4th(Tues.) The ceremony ended in great success attended by 100 people, including students. Major guests included Jeong-Gyusang President of SKKU, Yu-Jibeom Vice President of SKKU, Lee-Younggwan Dean of Planning and Regulation Division, Gwon-Younguk Dean of College of Science, Nam-Gyechun Leader of Natural Science Team of NRF, Lee-Yonghoon President of the Korean Mathematical Society (KMS), Lee-Hyeongcheon President of Korean Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (KSIAM) and professors. The 21st century is changing faster than ever unlike the previous century through the new paradigm of "knowledge-based society, complex and interdisciplinary convergence”. In particular, we are welcoming 4th industry revolution with intelligent information society led by computers, the Internet, smart devices and artificial intelligence. Daily mass data flooded the increasingly with the development of information and communication technologies. The importance of optimization theory in big data and artificial intelligence, which is leading the 4th industrial revolution is growing increasingly in mathematics. These are the times of opportunity to reveal the true power of mathematics and dynamic role in the phase of mathematics at intelligence information society is becoming more robust. Therefore a new principle to meet Big Data analysis, artificial intelligence research, including mathematical theory to derive the optimal answer to the new intelligence-based industries related issues is desperately needed. This was in accordance with the requirements of establishing the Research Center for Applied algebra and optimization. Purpose of the center is to explore solutions to scientific challenges and social issues by digging a study group with world-class creativity and excellence by applying new research techniques. It received funding from the government 8.5 billion won over the next seven years and has plan to apply creative research methods crossing-over between the interrelated fields of mathematical theory, research and related algorithms and optimization studies for Big data Analytics and foster scientific community. Professor Cheon-Gisang, leader of the center stated ambition to develop the center into a world-class research through active international academic exchange activities and program with domestic and foreign scholars network construction as well as international conferences, international joint research, overseas scholars to visit the research, international research institutes in algebra.
