- Prof. Young-hee LEE research team, Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics, Institute for Basic Science at Sungkyunkwan University, solving the two-dimensional substance heterogeneous synthesis problem through collaborative research [Edaily reporter Young-ho LEE] A Korean research team has developed a new method to synthesize a hexagonal boron nitride·hBN, 2 dimensional material composed with heterogeneous elements, into a single crystal first in the world. Ministry of Science and ICT(MSIT) said that Dr. Soo-min KIM (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), Prof. Young-hee LEE (Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics, Institute for Basic Science at Sungkyunkwan University), and Prof. Ki-gang KIM(Dongguk University) developed a technology to synthesize two-dimensional substances called a hexagonal boron nitride·hBN into a single crystal. Hexagonal boron nitride·hBN is hexagonal atomic structure such as graphene and a material that has a platy structure a composed of boron and nitrogen instead of carbon. The research results were published on November 16th in the international journal Science. This is a translation of the edaily article. - SKKU Ranks No.1 in Korean Comprehensive University by Joong Ang Daily
- Out of 57 comprehensive universities in Korea, the Joong Ang Daily evaluated the universities’ performances and SKKU was named No.2 in Korean University Rankings by the Joong Ang Daily, followed by Seoul National University (No.1 among Korean comprehensive university). Hanyang University placed in 3rd and Korea University and Yonsei University (Seoul) came in 4th fourth jointly. This year, SKKU received huge recognition mainly for its globalization index. The ratio of foreign students (14.8%) was the highest among all universities. Also, the ratio of international students who have qualified Korean or English proficiency to able to take classes were 78%. The university has raised the ratio of foreign language courses on campus to 41%, and foreign undergraduates will receive a scholarship if the average grade point average is 3.0 (out of 4.5) million) or more. Student exchange is also very active; there were 1,235 students went abroad last year. Ja Choon KOO, Vice-President of SKKU’s International Relations Division said, “We have exchange agreements with 940 universities in 76 countries, and about 100 graduates each year are receiving dual degrees with global institutes.”

- Prof. Do Hyun RYU and His Team Developed Asymmetric Synthetic Method for Square Carbon Ring Ketone compound using Lewis
- Prof. Do Hyun RYU of the Department of Chemistry succeeded in developing an asymmetric synthesis method of square carbon ring ketone compound using Lewis acid catalyst. Chiral square carbon ring compounds have attracted much attention from academia and industry as core structure of natural products with various physiological activities. Until recently, some of the leading research groups in the world have published studies on the development of synthetic methods, but there is no report on the asymmetric synthesis of square carbon ring compounds through rearrangement of tri-ring aldehydes. Using a non-metal Lewis acid catalyst, the team was able to synthesize quaternary carbon ring ketone compounds with high yield and stereoselectivity through cyclopronation/semipinacol rearrangement sequential reactions. The developed reaction is very efficient in terms of atom economy because it uses a simple starting material and produces only nitrogen gas byproducts. "The synthesis of chiral square carbon ring ketone compounds through rearrangement of tri-ring aldehydes is a challenge that has not been solved for over 50 years," said Prof. RYU who led this research. “The significance of this study is that this is the first time to successfully use catalysts and suggests the results of experiments that can identify reaction mechanisms.” Rectangular carbon ring ketone compounds are useful compounds that can be used for various ring expansion and ring opening reactions due to its ring strain and therefore, it is expected to be a very useful synthesis tool for short and easy synthesis. The results of this study were selected as a cover paper for the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS; IF = 14.357).
