- Dadang & Bio, Sungkyunkwan Univ. signed a consignment research contract
- Dadang & Bio Co., Ltd. announced on September 27 that it signed a consignment research contract with Sungkyunkwan University on the mechanism of immune control and chronic inflammation suppression through Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis. The study is based on the Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis theory. According to Dadang & Bio, the purpose of this commissioned research is to identify the causes of inflammation caused by various causes in Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis and to study the mechanisms of the immune system involved in inflammation and suppression. In addition, based on the research conducted in the commissioned research, the aim is to develop active substances that can affect Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis and develop them into pharmaceuticals. Dadang & Bio expects to conduct research with Sungkyunkwan University to analyze and evaluate the inflammation-related efficacy and immune-control mechanisms of Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis-based active candidates (over 60 species) and prepare a platform for the development of new drugs. And the results of the consignment research of Dadang & Bio-Sungkyunkwan University will be submitted to SCI-level journals in the future. - Natural Sciences Campus of SKKU opens the “Student Success Center”, the gateway between students and schools -Providing meticulous and comprehensive customized counseling and education support services between schools and students -On-campus hub for student success SKKU announced that it will launch the Student Success Center, which provides attentive and systematic student support programs for student success *, following the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, as well as the Natural Sciences Campus. The opening ceremony of the center was held on October 1, 2019 (Tue.) at the 1st floor of the Samsung Library, attended by President of SKKU Dong-ryeol Shin, Executive Vice President of Humanities and Social Science Campus Hong-jun Rhyu, Executive Vice President of National Sciences Campus Sung-jin Song and other leading personnels of SKKU. * Student success: To grow as a responsible citizen who can contribute to the development of a community where people live in a diverse and emotionally stable environment with dreams and hopes, and decide their career and life direction through diverse campus activities. The Student Success Center offers counseling services on a variety of topics (exploration, comparison and activities related to majors, program guidance for career exploration, interpersonal or emotional issues counseling and linking with relevant institutions, and other successful college life) and development and operation of student success programs. It helps students to solve their immediate concerns and problems, and further helps them to progress toward the 'student success' aimed at by students and schools. First launched at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in the first semester, the Student Success Center spreads students' mindsets in and out of school, improves the ability of various student groups (disabled, foreigners, returning students, etc.) to adapt to their campus life. It has been praised for its successful role in improving quality of support, integrating and guiding student support programs in schools, and leading innovation in higher education related to student success.

- The Dept. of BioCosmetics, Sungkyunkwan University, held 'CEO Special Lecture' on July 12 inviting Byung-jun Kwak, representative of Dadang & Bio. Representative Byung-jun Kwak's special lecture was entitled "The latest trends and case studies on the development of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics from natural polysaccharides." This special lecture was conducted to inspire the development of natural products and cosmetics industry by strengthening the family company agreement between Sungkyunkwan University and Dadang & Bio and sharing the theory of polysaccharides with future talents of Sungkyunkwan University. In a special lecture on the day, Kwak said, “There are many bio products under development based on polysaccharides, but not many developed products. This is because it is difficult to identify the effect mechanism according to the structure of the polysaccharides." And he added "In the polysaccharide natural product market, active polysaccharide structure analysis technology is becoming a key point. Polysaccharides present a new paradigm in the natural medicine and cosmetics market." - SKKU takes 89th place in THE World Rankings. No.1 private university in Korea
- THE (Times Higher Education) has announced the THE World University Rankings 2020. SKKU has dropped 7 places to 89th place but remained as No.1 comprehensive private university in Korea. SKKU received a slightly lower points in academic environment and research performance in comparison to the previous year. Seoul National University also dropped to 64th place and other engineering schools such as KAIST and POSTECH has also continued to drop to 110th and 146th respectively. Korea University rose to 179th place and Yonsei University took 197th place. The title of world’s top university went to Oxford University.

- Spread 'Saeyan' which proved its effectiveness through joint research between SKKU and JARES
- The Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (JARES) announced on August 26 that it has transferred the protection of the new White Tremella (a scientific name: Tremella fuciformis Berk), Saeyan, to private companies. 'Saeyan' is a pure Korean word with a meaning of new and white. As its name expresses, its lampshade is white. It has a fast bacterial culture, and is resistant to pests. In particular, a joint study with Sungkyunkwan University showed excellent anti-obesity activity and excellent functionality (related thesis: [A Comparative Study on the Physiological Activities of Auricularia spp.] ) (photo provided by JARES) JARES expects that the transfer of 'Saeyan' to the private sector will enable the market of differentiated White Tremella, in a situation that more than 80% of domestically distributed black mushrooms has being imported. As a result, it is expected to increase the competitiveness of safer and more functional Korean black mushrooms and contribute to increase of farm income. Kim Sung-il, Director of Technology, said, “We will continue our efforts to expand and supply domestically grown mushrooms, including health foods, to study the drying and storage methods of 'Saeyan' and to increase consumption. - 2019 Summer International Student Farewell Party
- The 2019 Summer International Student Farewell Party was held on August 26th. More than 330 graduating international students and their families join the farewell party. Tradition Korean dance “palilmu” was performed to congratulate the students. Also, SKKU Global Leader Award was awarded to 22 students. Hyunsoon Park, the Vice-President of International Affairs congratulated the students and said, “Please do not forget the lessons learned at Sungkyunkwan University and do not stop until you reach your goal.”

- SKKU Establishes Advisory Panel to Help Fight Japan’s Export Regulations
- SKKU established an advisory panel to support companies experiencing difficulties after Japan’s implementation of export regulations. It will provide technology and equipment to companies by making use of the R&D achievements within the university. The panel members include Prof. Byungduk CHOI (semiconductors/display), Prof. Soojung SEO (advanced materials), Prof. Yongsuk KIM (IoT and Smart Factory), Prof. Changsuk SUK (Automobile and mechanics), Prof. Sangjeon JUNG (pharmaceutics), Prof. Jihyung LEE (AI), and Prof. Jongsuh CHAE (electronic & electricity). The director of the advisory panel is Vice President Sungjin SONG. Each professor is from a different background and they will provide direct assistance to the companies. Once the team receives a request for assistance, it will review the request and match the company with the appropriate professor to look for a solution. Vice President Song said, “SKKU has had a strong network with conglomerates and local companies for many years. - WISET hosts 2019 Girls’ Engineering Weeks
- SKKU’s WISET (Women in Science, Engineering and Technology) held the “2019 Girls’ Engineering Weeks” on July 23rd at the Natural Sciences Campus. The main theme of this event was “Fulfilling 20s dream with engineering and science”. 230 students and parents from 66 middle/high school in Seoul/Gyeonggi region joined this event. The program began with a special lecture by Director Miae SON. Students had a chance to learn about 16 different majors in engineering and science and over 50 mentors who are current students at SKKU described their life in university. The open lab tour was conducted in the afternoon and students went around 17 labs to experience special facilities andtools that they have only seen in books. The admission administrative team also held an information session for parents and teachers who participated in the event. - THE (Times Higher Education) announced the world reputation ranking. SKKU is one of top 3 universities in Korea by being placed among 81-90th ranking. “THE World Reputation Rankings 2019” was determined based on the evaluations of reputable scholars in the world. The evaluation took place during the period November 2018 ~ February 2019. Each scholar was asked to pick top 15 universities in their research/education fields. - SKKU–COSMAXNBT Signed on Industry-Academic MOU Building cooperative relations, such as joint research and development, information sharing and exchange of technology and human resources Our university announced on July 12 (Friday) that it has signed a industry-academic MOU with COSMAX NBT (CEO Lee Yoon-jong) to jointly research health functional materials and foster professional manpower. Song Sung-jin, vice president of Sungkyunkwan University, Lee Seok-chan, dean of the College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Lee Yoon-jong, CEO of COSMAX NBT, and Yoon Man-seok, president of the institute, attended the signing ceremony on July 12 (Friday) morning. Through this agreement, our university and COSMAX NBT plan to take the lead in building a comprehensive and strategic industrial cooperation system, including development of functional materials in preparation for aging society, research on the improvement of absorption of pharmacological active materials, research on standardization of functional materials, technology transfer and commercialization of knowledge assets at Sungkyunkwan University, and training of professionals using resources from both institutions. "We hope that this MOU with COSMAX NBT will not only help research on new functional materials, but also make it a good example for industry and academia to work together," said Song Sung-jin, vice president of Sungkyunkwan University. "We believe Sungkyunkwan University, which is focusing on prior research on AI, the fourth industrial revolution technology, will produce the most innovative research results, and we look forward to continuing research and development through this opportunity," said Lee Yoon-jong, CEO of COSMAX NBT.
