- Spread the Excellence of Korean Red Ginseng to Russia
- The Korean Society of Ginseng announced on June 4 that an academic research report has been published that introduces the efficacy and clinical value of Korean red ginseng at the International Society of Natural Drugs held in Petersburg, Russia. At the conference, research results on improving the immune system of Korean red ginseng, improving fatigue in cancer and cancer patients, and alleviating side effects of anti-cancer drugs were announced, drawing keen attention from about 200 people including the Russian medical community who attended the event. "Red ginseng helps relieve stress and improve fatigue by suppressing the production of oxidizing substances in the brain and other bodies, and activating macrophages in charge of immune functions to help prevent cancer as well as various viral diseases," said Prof. Jae-yeol Cho, the Dept. of Intergrative Biotechnology at Sungkyunkwan University. "It has scientifically proven that Korean red ginseng excels in enhancing the immune system of modern people which is prone to weakening", he also said. Russian medical workers attending the academic conference also evaluated the clinical value of red ginseng's anti-cancer effect and the effect of improving fatigue in cancer patients. - The government has decided to intensively foster five major consumer goods
- The government has decided to intensively foster five major consumer goods, including agro-fisheries and food, cosmetics as promising new export items. It aims to achieve exports of the five major consumer goods by $35 billion by 2022, provide trade insurance worth 8 trillion won to export promising consumer goods companies this year, and inject 200 billion won into R&D. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Wednesday finalized a plan to boost exports of consumer goods at the 17th economic revitalization meeting chaired by the prime minister for Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-ki. It also supports entering global distribution networks that can enhance South Korea's image as a consumer goods brand. It is also going to ease regulations at home and abroad. The government plans to set up a "foreign certification support desk" at the Korea International Trade Association during the second half of the year and receive and manage a package of non-tariff barriers by local companies. In the case of major countries such as China and New South China, the government and the private sector will introduce a "participatory" system that will verify local authentication and regulatory information together and give incentives such as knowledge mileage system. - Research article of Dept. of Food Science and Biotechnology and Food Flavor Sensory Research Center has been published
- The research article of Dept. of Food Science and Biotechnology and Food Flavor Sensory Research Center has been published in Wiley Online Library. The title of this article is 「Extraction of Green Tea Phenolics Using Water Bubbled with Gases」 and the research was contucted by Ryu Ji-won (Dept. of Food Science and Biotechnology and Food Flavor Sensory Research Center, Sungkyunkwan Univ.), Prof. Kim Mi-ja (Dept. of Food and Nutrition, Kangwon Natl. Univ.) and Prof. Lee Jae-Hwan (Dept. of Food Science and Biotechnology and Food Flavor Sensory Research Center, Sungkyunkwan). Ms. Ryu conducted experiment mainly and prepared data. Prof. Kim advised preparing manuscripts and helped to strengthen the quality of this manuscript and Prof. Lee designed the experiment and discussed the results as a corresponding author. This research was supported by a grant (NRF‐2017R1A2B4002613) of the Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Republic of Korea. You can read the original of the whole article on the Wiley Online Library website (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1750-3841.14606). Title : Extraction of Green Tea Phenolics Using Water Bubbled with Gases Abstract : Water was bubbled with gases including nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and air for 10 min and phenolics from green tea leaves were extracted using the prepared gas‐bubbled water. To retain the gases in water, the extraction conditions were maintained in an air‐tight container at room temperature under magnetic stirring. Radical scavenging ability, total phenolic content, and phenolic profiles of the extracts were analyzed, and gas‐bubbled water was examined to explain the differences in phenolic contents. Overall, green tea infusion prepared from H2‐bubbled water contained significantly high levels of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity compared to other gas‐bubbled waters including N2, O2, CO2, and air (P < 0.05).Control samples and those bubbled with CO2 showed the lowest antioxidant activities in green tea infusion. However, green tea extracts with O2 bubbling showed the lowest catechin content. Green tea leaves treated with hydrogen gas‐bubbled water had much greater damage to their surface morphological properties compared to the other groups, which may explain the higher yield of phenolic compounds. Overall, hydrogen gas‐bubbled water showed better extraction yield of phenolics from green tea leaves than other gas‐bubbled water.

- Kolmar Korea has been recognized for its research and development capabilities in domestic native plants
- After three years of exhausting research for the development of native plants as cosmetic materials, Kolmar Korea discovered that “Nymphoides indica” and “Penthorum chinense” have excellent effects on anti-aging, reduction of inflammation and skin whitening. And it said the results were published in the internationally recognized journals(SCI) such as ‘Molecules’ and ‘Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity’, on April 22. Cho Jae-youl, a professor of Department of Integrative Biotechnology at Sungkyunkwan University who conducted the study with Kolmar Korea, announced that “Penthorum chinense has some effects for improving wrinkles, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and skin whitening” in “2019 International Seminar on the Trends of new technologies and materials in the cosmetics” at the KINTEX's 5th Hall on April 17. “We focused our research on materials that had been minimal for industrial use.” and “We are planning to develop a variety of cosmetic materials based on a number of native plants that have not yet been effective.” said the representative of Kolmar Korea. - Development of new materials for anti-aging, whitening cosmetics using ‘Penthorum chinense Pursh’
- Cos’in (CEO Gil Ki-woo) held a seminar "2019 International Seminar on the Trends of new technologies and materials in the cosmetics" at the KINTEX's 5th Hall on April 17. Cho Jae-youl, a professor of Department of Integrative Biotechnology at Sungkyunkwan University, said, “We need a new approach to research by utilizing natural resources in Korea. So I propose to apply the concept of ‘Autophagy’.” Autophagy is a way to regenerate cells by removing unnecessary proteins within cells which are aging tissues. He said,“If we regenerate the cells, they can have whitening effects by removing melanin, and also can remove pigments caused by aging. If we promote autophagy, we can get whitening and anti-aging effects.” Penthorum chinense Pursh that inhabits East Asian countries including Korea, China and Japan has been found to be effective in cell regeneration so it is used to treat festering and burn wounds. Prof. Cho Jae-youl said, “The research that unearthed Penthorum chinense Pursh is meaningful in that it has confirmed the improvement of wrinkles, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and whitening effects and realized its value as new cosmetics materials.” and “Further research and clinical tests are currently underway on how they can be used as cosmetics materials in the future,” This is a translation of a summary for the orignal article written by Park Sang-hyun, Cos'in Korea.
