- Prof. Tae Il KIM and Research Team Developed a Sensitivity Mechanosensor
- Prof. Tae-il Kim and his research team at Sungkyunkwan University proposed dramatically enhanced sensitivity in nanoscale crack-based mechanosensors by studying crack geometrical effects. The work was published in Advanced Materials. Until today, detecting a meaningful signal is still challenging because their subtle, minute amplitudes are embedded in relatively high-intensity noise. To overcome the chronic problem, Prof. Kim's group has developed dramatically enhanced mechanosensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio of nanoscale crack-based sensors. They focused on the geometry of cracks and controlled the geometry of crack on crack sensors, especially crack depth, by applying additional tensile forces after generating initial cracks without changing other geometrical factors. They raise the sensitivity up to 16,000, as well as a signal-to-noise ratio up to ~40 which enables the detecting of a few nanometer of stimulation. The team compared it to a previously reported sensor that detects various mechanical signals, hand movements and voice tone. The superior GF and SNR of SKKU's sensor enabled a clear signal detection of a voice, singing “Twinkle little star”, even in electrically-noisy environments. The team's strategy would be useful in security, recognition system and the healthcare system. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adma.201602425/abstract DOI: 10.1002/adma.201602425

- Students from SKKU received the 2nd Prize at BIOMOD Competition
- TEAM SKKU led by Prof. Seung Woo LEE (SAINT) with student members; Jae Won LEE (School of Chemical Engineering,’13), Yong Duk CHO (Dept. of Chemistry,’11), Jong Won LIM (School of Chemical Engineering,’12), and Kwang Jin KIM (Dept. of Eelctronic and Electrical Engineering) received the 2nd prize among 40 international teams at the 2016 BIOMOD Competition. BIOMOD is an annual biomolecular design competition for undergraduate students where teams compete to build new materials/design such as autonomous robots, molecular computers, and prototypes for nanoscale therapeutics, using the molecules of life (DNA, RNA, proteins, etc.). This competition was sponsored byWyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering of Harvard University and held at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). TEAM SKKU demonstrated nanoscale structure using self-assembled DNA, and through this, they induced non-natural optical characters by assembling gold nano particles. This study is considered very meaningful as it suggests the possibility of new applications of self-assembled DNA besides the Drug Delivery System or Molecular Computing, which were dealt with many times before in previous competitions. Right now the 2017 BIOMOD Competition is recruiting applicants and some students who participated in this year’s competition plan to join the 2017 BIOMOD Competition again as mentors. The participation of SKKU students at this competition was supported by SKKU Global Humanity Convergence and SKKU Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology, SAINT.

- SKKU-Ehwa Women’s University developed a nano chip to find the cause of anticancer drugs’ tolerance
- A joint research team led by Prof. Sung Su PARK (Mechanical Engineering) of SKKU and Prof. Sang Hyuk LEE (Dept. of Life Science) of Ehwa Women’s University, developed a technology which can quickly find the cause of the tolerance of anticancer drugs. Tolerance of anticancer drugs is considered to be the biggest obstacle for curing cancer, due to the lower effectiveness of cancer treatment and to raise the possibility of reoccurrence of the disease. Therefore, finding the cause of the tolerance has always been a popular research topic. The research team was able to investigate the cause of anticancer drug tolerance via developing a nano chip. By applying this nano chip to brain tumor cell strains, they could induce the tolerance of doxorubicin anticancer drugs and successfully discovered how the tolerance was able to brake out. “This technology can be applied to various cancers and anticancer drugs” said Prof. PARK. “This technology can the cause of a patients’ tolerance within a short period of time (1 month).” This project was supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The results of the study were published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences on Nov 22nd.

- Dean of Natural Science/Engineering of University of Minnesota visited our Natural Science Campus
- Mr. Samuel Mukasa, the Dean of Natural Science / Engineering of University of Minnesota visited SKKU’s Natural Science Campus on Nov 11th (Fri) and had a meeting with our representatives including; Vice-President (Ji Beom YOO), Dean of College of Information and Communication Engineering (Byung Woo JEON), Professor of the Department of Software (Jae Hoon JEONG), and the Professor of School of Chemical Engineering (Jae Wook NAM), in order to discuss possible collaborations. At the meeting, many subjects such as student exchange agreements and internship programs, which can offer opportunities to faculty, researchers, and students to experience practical learning, were discussed. Mr. Mukasa mentioned that the educational policy of SKKU is same as the University of Minnesota’s where the research and education activities are in operation centering around the industry cooperation program. He agreed to actively develop exchange programs by reviewing coursework and the degree requirements of both universities. The University of Minnesota is one of the top institutions, ranked 137th by QS rankings, especially for the field of engineering (ranked 15th in Chemical Engineering). SKKU made an academic exchange agreement with Minnesota in 2014, and is expanding exchanges with the university through various activities such as joint academic forum by the Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics.

- Suwon City named a road after SKKU
- Suwon City assigned the honored name “Sungdae-ro” to the road which is located around 1600m of SKKU’s Natural Science Campus and the botanical garden. The honor can be given under special circumstances such as corporation installation and international exchanges. SKKU requested to receive the road name last October. The Committee of Road Name Address reviewed the request and decided to give the name due to recognizing SKKU’s contribution to the city as a landmark of local society; as well as the positive effect the university has had for raising the brand value of Suwon City. According to the Road Name Address Act, “Sungdae-ro” will be used in conjunction with the legal road name (Ilwol-ro, Yuljun-ro) for 5 years, which can be extended after a review from the committee. The exact location of “Sungdae-ro” can be found at Road Name Address System, http://www.juso.go.kr.
