- Sustainable Chemistry at Sungkyunkwan University
- Sustainable Chemistry at Sungkyunkwan University Prof. Nam-Gyu Park* Article first published online: 16 JUL 2015 DOI: 10.1002/cssc.201500902 © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Issue With Korea’s science and engineering field reflecting on self criticism towards the ‘easy research’ trend, there is a ‘Dream team’ that is putting out outstanding world level research. The team in question is Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU)’s College of Engineering. The German world journal in chemical fusion, ChemSusChem announced on July 19, that they will be publishing a special edition on July 20, entitled ‘Sustainable Chemistry at Sungkyunkwan University.’ ChemSusChem research journal is a world top ranked journal that is in the top 10% with an impact factor(IF) of 7.657. Having a research journal of this stature publish a special edition on researchers of a Korean university, let alone any university in the world, is very exceptional. The special editions contains reviews of 13 papers of 13 researchers: Department of Chemical Engineering Prof. Park Nam-gyu, Chung Chan-hwa and Yoo Pil-jin, Department of Advanced Material Science and Engineering Prof. Whang Dong-mok, Kim Sang-woo and Jung Hyun-suk, Department of Energy Science Lee Young-hee, Shin Hyun-jung, Yoon Won-sub and Kim Sung-woong, Department of Mechanical Engineering Baik Seung-hyun, Department of Chemistry Prof. Jung Duk-young and Chang Jong-san. The article will be focusing on the many ways of developing alternative energy. The Perovskite solar battery which shows greatly enhanced efficiency compared to current silicon based solar batteries, secondary cell accumulative technologies, technologies transforming chemical reactions into energy and others are included in the edition. Invited as the guest editor, Prof. Park Nam-gyu assesses that “This instance shows that not only SKKU but Korea’s research in the field of alternative energy is gaining worldwide recognition.” The research mind set, not as a ‘fast follower’ but as a ‘first mover’ who pioneers new fields could be considered the basis for publishing this special edition. Prof. Park also emphasized that “For a researcher the most important thing is not stable research to just put out results but bold research that predicts technologies that people will need in 10 to 20 years.” Link to media: http://news.mk.co.kr/newsRead.php?year=2015&no=691579&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=sns&utm_campaign=share ChemSusChem http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cssc.201500902/abstract Special Issue: Sustainable Chemistry at Sungkyunkwan University Volume 8, Issue 14, page 2271, July 20, 2015
