1940’s
  • Faculty of Literature was newly founded and the Department of Literatures (Korean Literature major, English Literature major, French Literature major and Korean History major) were established (1946)
1950’s
  • According to the Education Administration Act, the Faculty of Literature was reorganized into Department of Oriental Philosophy, Korean Literature, English Literature, French Literature and Korean History (1951)
  • Sungkyunkwan University received accreditation from college to university.
  • College of Liberal Arts and Science was newly founded.
  • In the Faculty of Literature, the Departments of Korean Literature, English Literature, French Literature, Korean History, and Education were established (1953)
  • Chinese Language and Literature at the College of Liberal Arts and Science were established(1955)
  • German Language and Literature at the College of Liberal Arts and Science were established(1959)
1960’s
  • The first essay-contest for high school students was held (1961)
  • Department of Library in the College of Liberal Arts and Science was established (1964)
  • College of Liberal Arts and Science was reorganized into College of Liberal Arts (1965)
1970’s
  • Humanities and Social Science Research was divided into Humanities Science Research Institute and Social Science Research Institute (1972)
  • Department of Philosophy in the College of Confucianism was transferred to College of Liberal Arts (1979)
1980’s
  • Department of Chinese Characters in the College of Liberal Arts were established (1988)
1990’s
  • Department of Library in the College of Liberal Arts was renamed to Department of Library Information Science (1991)
  • Russian Language and Literature at the College of Liberal Arts weren established (1993).
  • Full-scale implementation and reorganization of Undergraduate Studies System, Departments of Linguistics/ Literatures, Undergraduate Studies of Humanities were reorganized, and College of Liberal Arts was renamed to College of Humanities (1996)
2000’s
  • Major in Russian Language and Literature of Undergraduate Studies were renamed to Major in Russian Linguistics and Literature (2002)
  • Major in French Language and Literature of Undergraduate Studies were renamed to Major in France Linguistics and Literature (2004)
  • College of Humanities was selected as the Support Business of the Metropolitan University Specialized (2005)
  • Undergraduate Studies of the Language and Literature in the Undergraduate course were integrated into College of Humanities (2006)
  • Credit exchange with Okayama University in Japan was conducted as a part of the global program in the College of Humanities (tuition, room and board supported by the College of Humanities) (2009)

The global program is currently ongoing

2010’s
  • Student Exchange Program, as a part of the global humanities program by College of Liberal Arts, was established to strengthen language training and to promote global leaders dispatched to the university specified by the zones of language- English-speaking, Chinese-speaking, German-speaking, French-speaking, Japanese-speaking and Russian-speaking (2011)

The global program is currently ongoing


  • "The First Academic Cultural Festival by College of Humanities" was held (2011)
  • College of Humanities was selected as a pilot project of CAMPUS Asia in which Korea, China and Japan would participate from 2012 to 2016, and global programis still in progress (dispatching students between the involved countries, curriculum development and operating multiple degrees) (2012)
  • College of Humanities was selected for CORE (CORE: Initiative for College of Humanities' Research and Education) sponsored by government financial support programs (2016)
  • Department of Korean Education were established (2018)
