The Department of Library and Information Science was established in 1964 as an undergraduate program with 20 students. The department started a masters’ program in 1971. The Ph.D. program, launched in 1974, was the first of its kind in the field of Library and Information Science in South Korea. In 1991, the Department of Library Science was renamed as the Department of Library and Information Science, corresponding to the increasing needs of an information-oriented society. During the past half century, the department has produced more than 1,800 alumni who have worked at various areas such as libraries, information centers, public sectors, and ICT companies.
The SKKU LIS not only has provided traditional courses in Library Science and Bibliography to maintain social effectiveness, but also offers courses related to Informatics reflecting current global trend called “digital area” and “big data”. The department’s longtime efforts were paid off by joining the International iSchool Consortium in February, 2014 after passing all the complicated, strict requirements and qualifications on education and research capacity. SKKU was the first LIS department in Korea to become a member of the international iSchool Consortium, making this a historic event for the field. To top it all, SKKU LIS was chosen to implement a federal funding project called “Training World-class Data Scientists based on iSchool Program” and established a new interdisplinary major, “Data Science”, to train Data Scientists. The courses for Data Science will be offereded in March, 2015.
