This class focuses on learning modern Japanese history from the Meiji Restoration to the Pacific War, while also examining how Japan's modernity has influenced the international community in East Asia. First, let's look at the historical situation before the Sino-Japanese War to see how modern Japan was formed. Secondly, how modern Japan influenced East Asian society after the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War is examined by considering not only acceptance but also reaction aspects. Political history is the center, but we will also deal with socio-cultural aspects such as the so-called chain of ideas and the impact on nationalism in each country. Therefore, this class focuses on Japanese history, but will also be conducted by referring to the trends of contemporary Korean and Chinese history.

This course provides an understanding of Japanese contemporary literature and culture in a systematic manner. This class selects and discusses an certain issue from various fields of history, culture, politics, and economics within one semester.

The establishment of unique and particular relationships is the precondition for identifying a specific space among areas. Such relation network, different from that of other regions, exercises greater influence on all members involved, in either direct or indirect fashion. East Asia also had its own relation structure in the light of this fact. This course aims to examine changes in ways for countries to be connected in the pre-modern era and study Japanese history in the light of such relation network.

This course aims at reading various social phenomena and culture in Japanese society through Japanese. Students can have a more direct and in-depth access to Japan by accessing Japanese society through Japanese texts, not Korean-translated texts.

Korea and Japan share not only geographical proximity but also the memory of colony-empire, but since the 1950s, they have been closely intertwined with each other as members of the US-led military-economic block of East Asia. This lecture focuses on Korean and Japanese culture and examines how the culture of these two regions was formed on this historical and political horizon. The purpose of the lecture is to enhance a deeper understanding that can overcome the current conflict between Korea and Japan.

Recently, Interest in the war is rising as the outbreak ofthe war in Ukraine and tensions in the Taiwan Strait rise. With the developmentof information and communication, the horrors of real-time war are shocking tous and providing an opportunity to look back on the war in history. In this class, we will examine how the war has affected not only Japanese society but also world history by looking at the wars that have occurred since ancient times in Japan to modern times. First, we will look at what kind of wars have historically occurred in Japan. Second, by looking at the war in Japanese history, we will look at how the war affected Japanese society. Third, we will look at how Japan's war affected world history. By examining the war in Japanese history in this way, we hope that it will be an opportunity to find out what internal and external effectsthe phenomenon of war has on future generations and to think about the meaning of international cooperation for peace again.

This lecture is to study the contents and to create a deeper understanding of how this (advanced) development took place across the East Asian region and that the Chinese literature laid down a cultural and common ground for the whole region.
