This course aims at developing all communication skills needed for the test: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We will therefore practice role plays, short presentations and debating. Various topics will be reviewed in order to improve vocabulary, and become able to talk and write on these topics (education, culture, health, environment, social issues, etc.). If some students wish, we will also prepare DELF B2.

This course deals with French literary works from the middle ages to the present and their adaptation into different media forms such as film, advertisement, TV series, architecture, city planning, music and practical fine art. The two central topics include the intertextuality between literary works and adaptations, and the cultural values of adaptation. The examination of each work will entail issues such as: the ways in which a literary text is transposed into a different textual form in terms of themes, historical contexts and styles; the ways in which the cultural value of a literary work is multiplied through adaptation.

This course focuses on approaching to French culture as whole (French movies, French art, French literature and such) from gender-inspired themes. The course will primarily observe various aspects of sexuality and love in French culture, and then make critique on the observed points from the standpoint of gender. Points to be discussed: what are the modalities that French culture has employed in expressing love and sexuality? What patriarchal property could be found in the French culture, and does a cultural feminism exist? The course will attempt to answer such questions through a historical contemplation on French culture and through various theories of feminism.

In this course, we aim to understand French society and culture through reading advertisements. We will read a range of texts relating to semiotics, linguistics, cultural studies and media studies to explore key approaches to analysing advertising. This will allow for critical examination of advertisements in terms of how they represent and contribute to shaping various aspects of French society and culture, particularly regarding issues such as history, national identity, politics, art, gender, food and globalisation.

In this course, we will treat French opera and musical theatre through visual media of important works. Initially, we examine the birth of the French opera, its evolution and its specificity. Also we approach how the opéra comique and the operetta play a considerable part in the birth of musical theatre. In the second time, after having considered the history of musical theatre, we analyze the representations of the French musical theatre in order to seize its cultural aspects and its characteristic.

This course allows students to question how the French cultural contents all through the history gave inspiration to many famous French films and French talking film in Francophone territories (Quebec, North Africa, etc.) Cultural contents such as historical facts, legends, ideologies but also novels and music are a part of the specific quality of French films which are now produced all around the world. Following this globalization of the French cultural contents we will study some famous films from non French territories but were we can find a strong French influence. Finally, the high artistic level and the very personal way of French directors to create films will be questioned through several cases of famous films old and new.
