Media reflect the world we belong to, and information transmitted through words and voices expresses our ideas and our conception of the society in which we live. Therefore, learning through media is very helpful to get familiar with a culture and understand the people who live in that culture. This course focuses on better understanding of French realities and heritage through various media. It aims at arising students’ interest in French culture, current events, contemporary French issues as well as relations with other countries. Media contents lead to discussions on various topics surveyed such as community life, behaviors, habits, new tendencies. Through this course, students also improve their comprehension of implicit aspects contained in speech and culture. Media used during the class – including Internet – are mainly TV5Monde, radio RFI, videos, newspapers and magazines. The class is taught in French therefore requires an intermediate level in French language (listening, reading and speaking).

This course aims to give a lecture on French cultural policy. France is a country that has developed cultural policies from François I and has developed nationally-focused cultural policy from an early stage. In this way, through the history of French cultural policy that began in the 16th century, it is historically meaningful what kind of French cultural policy has evolved through its trajectory and what direction it has developed It is the first stage of this subject to examine French cultural policy from a historical perspective, centering on policies that occurred at the points.The second step is to see the actual facts of cultural policies implemented in France and the reasons for the local governments' positions and policies that lead them. France, which local governments have developed from the early days, is promoting the development of local governments through cultural policy under the initiative of the autonomous government. Through concrete examples of planning and the actual progress of these fat policies, we will see the cultural policy.
