This course deals with French literary works from the middle ages to the present and their adaptation into different media forms such as film, advertisement, TV series, architecture, city planning, music and practical fine art. The two central topics include the intertextuality between literary works and adaptations, and the cultural values of adaptation. The examination of each work will entail issues such as: the ways in which a literary text is transposed into a different textual form in terms of themes, historical contexts and styles; the ways in which the cultural value of a literary work is multiplied through adaptation.

The purpose of this class is to analyze examples of modern storytelling of various Korean classics and develop them as cultural contents, and to explore new objects and methods. Therefore, students of this course will learn how to develop a new cultural content by applying modern narrative techniques and cultural styles while cultivating an eye for discovering appropriate objects from the history, characters, thoughts, literature, and arts of the classics.

Media acceptance has reached a transitional stage, as video content is no longer watched for the sake of watching, but for the sake of being informed by the narrative. In this situation, the rise of animation is a remarkable event. The aim of this course is to analyse animated works from the point of view of their medial form of expression, taking into account multiple perspectives such as the technology of re-marketing that makes them possible, the reproduction of characters, including content tourism, and the socio-cultural process of expression and reception. The texts studied in class will be prioritised for their ability to generate diverse discussions, but will also take into account contemporary trends in popularity. The first half of the class will be devoted to an overview of theories relating to anime and subcultures and an appreciation of key texts to which they are applied, while the second half will be devoted to participatory textual criticism and discussion. The final aim is to produce a critical essay based on the texts.

is a course to develop perspectives and ideas for living as a 'global citizen' by understanding the cultural and political situation of Korea, which has become a 'multicultural and multiracial country' with more than 5% foreign residents. We will examine various aspects of identity and life shaped by transnational politics and industry, including situations such as overseas study, tourism, migrant labour, immigration, and international marriage. The course also aims to understand the Korean Wave, which is an important component of global popular culture today and is changing Korean cultural nationalism and image geography. The Korean Wave is a multilayered and hybrid cultural phenomenon that ranges over dramas, K-pop, films, games, foods, and others. Understanding the cultural and political role of the Korean Wave is necessary to better understand and communicate with ourselves and the world. In particular, this course will actively engage students in expressing and sharing their own experiences, as well as engaging with individuals working in the field of Korean Wave and global culture.

This course will focus on the textual issues of games, including game narratives and genres, as well as the problems of the realities surrounding the game.
GCC3020 The Understanding and Creation of Web Novels 3 6 Major Bachelor 3-5 Korean Yes
‘Understanding and Creating Web Novels’ is a subject that learns various characteristics and narrative techniques of web novels and challenges basic creation. This lectures are divided into three parts, ① theory and history, ② reading and discussing novels, and ③ creating and grouping activities, for 4 weeks each. It deals with the theory and practice of historical and cultural changes from the PC communication period to the present, examining the industrial ecosystem and unique publishing relationship centered on the platform, genre characteristics and optimized sentence style, narrative development method, and directing characters and viewpoints. The novels to be read and discussed are selected as topics that sharply reflect the psychology of the contemporary public and have historical value for research in this field. Conversations with writers in the form of special lectures are also promoted. Reflecting the above educational activities, students write a web novel creation plan or pilot episode (3 to 4 A4 pages). Afterwards, through group activities, opinions are heard, and the final version is submitted.

Recently, mystery narratives have been gaining big attention in TV/OTT dramas and movies. They are expanding their scope by mixing with various genres such as police/crime, romance, history dramas and science fiction. The popularity of mystery narratives depends not only on the capabilities of star writers or fun of entertainment, but also on the desires and memories of comtemporary audiences, their awareness of history, their attitude toward the world, and their awareness of law and illegality. In this course, we study the concept and history of mystery narratives as a representative genre of K-contents, and analyze related dramas and films from a social, cultural, and gender perspective. This course will enable students to explore the meaning and definition of mystery narratives and critically examine various popular contents. The course will consist of lectures by the instructor and student presentations and discussions. Students analyze mystery narratives they are interested in and present the results.

Media technologies have a profound impact on the way we understand and experience our bodies. This course aims to understand and analyse the relationship between media and technology and 'other' bodies. By "other" bodies I mean people with various identities such as illness, disability, LGBTQ, people of colour, etc. who are considered abnormal by society and whose existence is denied. In this course, students will learn about the categories and theories of minority media and cultural studies and analyse how different bodies are represented in the media and how they use media and technology to construct their lives. Based on this learning, students will write critical texts and engage in discussions. Through this course, students will develop the ability to critically interpret minority and media issues in society and rediscover the existence of difference beyond all hierarchies and norms of normality.
