Maeil Business Newspaper 'Good Professor, Good Lecture'
Prof. Raunaq Pungaliya at SKK GSB Sungkyunkwan University
As Korea enters the AI-driven 4th industrial revolution, businesses will require managers with both a clear understanding of business priorities and deep analytical skills to make business sense of the data around them. Top-tier managers with this skill set are rare and highly prized throughout the world. Moreover, as the business environment evolves, many professionals are concerned that their existing education will become obsolete.
Business Analytics is one of the fastest growing fields worldwide. According to Professor Raunaq Pungaliya of SKK GSB, “The reason for this is simple – businesses are creating an incredibly rich amount of data. Good businesses have always strived to use data to make better business decisions, but the very best businesses view data as a means of competitive advantage.”
In order to fill this important gap in business education in Korea, Professor Raunaq Pungaliya of SKK GSB is helping to introduce a new and cutting-edge MS in Business Analytics (MS BA) specially designed with working professionals in mind. The academic curriculum for the program has been carefully curated with the needs of both large businesses and startups, so graduates of the program will be ready to contribute in analytics roles almost immediately.
Specifically, students will be trained not only in hard skills such as Python, R, AI-based predictive models, and big data tools and techniques, but also more importantly in how these tools can be readily applied to business applications.
He strongly believes that effective teaching and student achievement best takes place when students are engaged in and excited about learning, and when they can connect their learning to their own lives and the real world. Thus, as with all GSB programs, the MS in Business Analytics will draw heavily upon SKK GSB’s core teaching philosophy of action-based learning or learning by doing as students will be required to think critically, analyze, and develop analytical solutions to solve real business problems throughout their coursework and in a capstone Applied Business Project.
Professor Pungaliya teaches topics related to Investments, Capital Markets, and International Finance at SKK GSB to MBA and MS students, and will also be teaching FinTech and Banking Analytics in the MS BA program.
Emilie Touvet, MMS exchange student from EDHEC Business School, said “Professor Pungaliya is a challenging and attentive professor, truly available for his students. His class was lively, with a large variety of content and a genuine student involvement through questions and group news presentation.”
Professor Raunaq Pungaliya is an Associate Professor of Finance and the Faculty-Chair of Full-Time MBA and MS Programs at SKK Graduate School of Business at Sungkyunkwan University. He joined SKK Graduate School of Business in 2010. Since then he has been a recipient of multiple teaching excellence awards in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019.
His research work focuses on corporate banking and debt markets and has been presented at major conferences such as the American Finance Association and the American Accounting Association Annual Meetings and published in leading academic journals such as the Accounting Review, Management Science, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
